Nicaragua Equipped with a Modern Telecommunications System

The telecommunications infrastructure in Nicaragua has evolved considerably in recent years, from being one of the least developed in Central America and the Caribbean to become one of the most modern in Latin America.

WASHINGTON, DC, April 23, 2010 /Web Hosting and ISP PR News/ -- The Nicaraguan Telecommunications Company (ENITEL, for its acronym in Spanish), recently completed the construction of a national network of 4,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables that reach even the country's most remote villages. The US$300 million network is equipped with Internet Protocol (IP) / Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Next Generation Networking (NGN), which allows convergence of voice, data and video.

Since 2008, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector implemented new, third generation (3.5G) wireless capabilities which run over a standard telecommunications platform for multimedia broadband (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System / High Speed Downlink Packet Access). The recent establishment of Russian Mobile WIMAX service provider, Yota, will soon introduce 4G technology to the local market, further advancing in the modernization of Nicaragua's telecommunication system.

In the case of Internet services and data transmission, Nicaragua offers redundant, high-quality, fiber optic connections and multiple outputs through 3 international submarine cable systems: Arcos-1, Maya-1 and Emergia.

Additionally, a study conducted in 2008 by PRONicaragua, the official investment promotion agency of Nicaragua, revealed that more than 8,700 students among the top universities in the country were enrolled in careers related to ICT. This represents a solid base of professionals who ensure the availability of trained personnel suited to become a part of the dynamic and growing ICT industry in Nicaragua and who will contribute significantly to its development.

The modern data infrastructure, an excellent broadband redundancy and a cost-competitive and highly productive labor force have earned Nicaragua recognition as one of the most attractive countries in the region for investments in the ICT sector. Prestigious international companies such as Stream Global Services and SITEL have established operations in Nicaragua, demonstrating the country has the advanced ICT infrastructure that the business services outsourcing (BSO) industry requires to compete internationally.

PRONicaragua is the Nicaraguan Investment Promotion Agency, established in 2002. It is a non-profit, public-private institution whose mission is to generate economic growth and job creation in Nicaragua by attracting high-quality foreign direct investment. The agency provides complimentary support services to qualified investors seeking investment opportunities in our country.
